“Life sometimes has a moment as you are faced with a challenge and the realization that doctors would say to the love of my life that he needed to write a book. He would respond, telling them, “Gina is going to write my book.” I made a promise that I would always keep, and that was to write this book, and I did.
I wrote this book for him but also for both of us. The words came easy to me because I am telling the story of what we lived and witnessed together. I took notes along the way to capture meaningful, life-changing moments.
Writing this book is what I loved doing for David with the most memorable life events and moments that are sometimes funny, wonderful, and heartbreaking at the same time. I named the titles of every chapter as I went along. It took me about five years total, full of many tears and emotions. I would write here and there and step away and take a break for a while.
As you read this book, you can surely see there was love between the two of us. When you read this true story, you will be inspired, motivated, emotional, and it will have life lessons. The love he gave during his unraveling times as he was going through a cancer battle is remarkable. He continued to give of himself and show love to the people around him with unselfish love as I stood by his side. He shows me how he is a giver during the terminal times of his life. Without hesitation, that is love.
Although writing all my memories of Presidential Spirit was so painful and hard to relive for me as I would write or type the moments as they happened in the real-life I lived.
There are two chapters that I wrote last because I had to reflect on a time that caused me so much heartache and pain. I was amazed at the drive and my ability to stay focused with never missing or skipping a moment for us to be so close as lovers and companions until the cancer took his life.
Along the way, I experienced emotions from great happiness to extreme sadness and everything in between. When I write, I found that my heart, mind, and the paper have a connection. They come to life.”
